Our project management team were brought on board by the St Johns Presbyterian Church build committee to help turn their vision for the church re-build into a reality. Our role involves project design review, procuring contractors and managing the construction of the new church.


In 2017, St Johns Church was destroyed by a fire, and this project will see a new church built on the same site. The new St Johns Church development will serve as a place of worship and recreation for  Rotorua community members. The construction of a St Johns Church is to be a single-story structure with a mezzanine comprising of an auditorium, office, kitchen, bathrooms and multipurpose function rooms. It has been designed to interact with and allow the community to use the new church for different activities and will also include a food bank and drop-in centre. Acoustics have been incorporated into the design and it also features a central hub with a kitchen that opens up into the rest of the building that includes offices and smaller rooms for church and community use.

There is a remarkably high standard of finish required for this project with particular regard to the decorative façade, the heights and volumes of spaces with regards to prescriptive detailed interior finish schedules as well as coordinating audiovisual, lighting and acoustic requirements.

Our team undertook a full budget review and project analysis to determine the replacement value of the project. This enabled the insurance company and church to arrive at an adequate settlement figure for the rebuild of the church.

Throughout the design review process, our team were able to identify gaps in the consultant reports and project design prior to construction starting. This enabled the design team to address and close out these items without detriment to the build. We achieved this by:

  • Reviewing general design details and the coordinating various design disciplines
  • Highlighting risks or considerations related to the design or proposed project
  • Providing a checklist for the architect & client to respond to notes and assumptions of the design review

Our team were also able to add additional value during the tender analysis where we were able to test the market and achieve a competitive lump sum price for the project. At the forefront of every project is clear communication, keeping the client informed the whole way through the process to ensure there are no surprises. Our team continues to work in a collaborative manner with the main contractor to ensure any issues that arise are solved in the fastest most cost-effective way.

At the end of this project, Rotorua District Presbyterian Church will receive a brand-new place of worship, which they have waited four years for. Being part of a project of this nature is extremely rewarding for our team and it’s a pleasure to help deliver a brand new, state-of-the-art church for the local community. This church rebuild represents a significant investment for the congregation and it is an investment in the community, not just in a building.

Ground improvement works are almost complete, with the foundations and topping slab due to be complete by mid-January.
