Investing in Future Talent – Q&A with Sophie
Sophie Cooke shares her experience…
This month, we celebrate a significant milestone at Veros: the ten-year anniversary of Mike Kemeys. Known affectionately to his colleagues as “Supercomputer” or simply “MK,” Mike is undeniably a rock within our ranks. His reputation precedes him, and when we onboard new clients, they swiftly recognise the immense commercial value Mike contributes. This blend of expertise and respect has become integral to the Veros identity.
Mike’s story at Veros started in 2014, but his roots in property and development run deep. From his early days as a surveyor’s chainman at fourteen to mastering urban development and design, Mike’s path has been driven by a profound passion for property. His decision to join Veros, drawn by the company’s unique position in the industry and a smaller, family-oriented company culture, marked the beginning of a transformative era for both him and the team.
Described by colleagues as less of a fountain of knowledge and more of a well, Mike has been the safety blanket for many in our team. His knack for spreadsheets, stormwater drainage innovations, and subdivision schemes has optimised countless projects. Yet, it’s his ability to foster good relationships across the industry, mentor emerging talent, and invest deeply in the team that truly sets him apart. Mike operates with a level of respect and integrity that resonates, earning him the moniker of “Mr. Speak Last” – a testament to the weight his words carry in any discussion.
From being a frustrated urban designer in Sydney to taking the leap as a shareholder when Veros was just a ten-person team, Mike’s journey has been marked by bold decisions and mutual trust within the team. His analytical and design skills have been pivotal in steering Veros through complex challenges and in shaping the urban environments we interact with daily. Since joining, Veros has grown from five members to a robust team of over thirty, spreading across three offices and leaving a tangible impact on the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and beyond.
Mike is a legend of a man; his quiet demeanour and profound knowledge have made him an invaluable mentor and team player. His story at Veros is a powerful reminder of how dedication, respect, and the willingness to invest in people can create an enduring legacy. As we look toward the future, Mike’s insights and leadership will undoubtedly continue to guide our team in facing new challenges and ensuring that we remain at the forefront of the industry.
Thank You, Mike
To Mike, thank you for ten incredible years. Your contributions have shaped Veros in ways that words can scarcely capture. Here’s to the memories made, the challenges overcome, and the journey ahead. Your Veros family is profoundly grateful for your dedication, and we look forward to many more years of making a difference together.
From Team Veros.
