Project overview

Veros has partnered with Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) since 2020, offering strategic property and facility project advice to support the vital work of SLSNZ’s 74 clubs and their 18,000+ members. Our collaboration focuses on enhancing the functionality and sustainability of surf lifesaving facilities across Aotearoa, ensuring they meet the needs of the volunteers who provide essential services, saving hundreds of lives each year.

Key Initiatives:

  • Assisted in securing approximately $18m in capital funding through the Crown Infrastructure Partners Fund for the construction and renovation of surf lifesaving facilities.
  • Conducted comprehensive evaluations of club facilities to inform long-term management and development plans.
  • Served as independent advisors for the SLSNZ Capital Projects Fund, guiding the allocation of Crown funding to maximise impact and efficiency.
  • Performed detailed feasibility assessments for lifesaving facilities in Whanganui, Bethells Beach, and Nelson, among others.

Recognising the need for early project support, Veros helped develop a framework to ensure club capital projects are well-aligned with community needs while minimising financial and reputational risks. This initiative includes:

  • Reference facility designs that offer scalable and flexible design templates that can be adapted based on individual club requirements and growth projections.
  • The spatial assessment tool that can be used to provide clubs with a strategic guide to plan and execute capital projects effectively, tailored to surf lifesaving operations.

Utilising the Spatial Assessment, Design & Development Guide has transformed how we approach the development of lifesaving facilities. This tool has streamlined our concept design process, setting a valuable financial benchmark for feasibility assessments. This ensures the best possible value for the community and maximises the impact of the SLSNZ Capital Projects Fund.

Early adoption of the project’s outputs has already led to considerable savings in time and consultancy costs for several clubs, with positive implications for future developments.

Leveraging our extensive property and strategic development expertise, along with the unique insights of team members who are volunteer lifeguards, Veros has delivered a comprehensive advisory service that transcends traditional consultancy. By assembling a steering group of SLSNZ staff and experienced volunteers, we’ve ensured that the project is grounded in real-world experience and club needs.
